documentary film: A Kurdish Movie

A Kurdish Movie is a a motorcycle adventure in Iraqi Kurdistan with the ‘Long Way Round‘ cameraman Claudio von Planta and his fellow biker friend Billy Ward (Biketruck) and supported by the Kurdish filmmakers Kae Bahar and Miran Dizayee.

The warmth of the people and sadness, as Billy learns more and more about the history of the region, is thought provoking.

In a country where there aren’t any big adventure style motorcycles, the guys are gobsmacked as the Kurdish officials help them out with a couple of unique loan bikes.

But when riding to the Mosul frontline and staying with the Peshmerga – Claudio and Billy are on edge!

About the Kurdistan Region

The Kurdistan Region, also known as Iraqi Kurdistan, is an autonomous region in northern Iraq. Spanning approximately 40,000 square kilometers, it encompasses parts of the four governorates of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja. The region’s capital and largest city is Erbil.

Historically, the Kurds have long sought greater autonomy or independence. The Kurdistan Region gained semi-autonomous status in 1991 following the Gulf War and has since developed its own government, known as the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The region is rich in natural resources, particularly oil, which has been a source of both economic growth and political tension with the central Iraqi government. Agriculture and tourism also play significant roles in the local economy.

Kurdish culture is distinct, with its own language, traditions, and customs. The region has faced numerous challenges, including conflicts with neighboring countries and internal political divisions. Despite these obstacles, the Kurdistan Region has achieved relative stability and economic development

A Kurdish Movie

The film follows an adventure ride of discovery crossing northern Iraq – The Kurdistan Region. Riding across a war zone – who would have thought you could have so much fun?

The journey ends in Erbil, the capital of Kurdistan with a bizarre motorcycle parade across the city. Motorcycles appeared out of the wood work – unofficial and off the radar. Wheelies, burn outs and pure fun.

The air was thick with the smell of rubber and hot engines. We hope you like it – we loved it!
